Log Home Building

The origins of log home building

The conscience for ecological way of building houses is especially growing here in Germany. The trend is more and more going towards old and proven ways of building houses to which the building of wooden houses belongs. Canadian Log Homes are the very original form of wooden houses and are being constructed predominantly in regions, which are rich of wood. Hence, you will find these houses especially in Siberia, Finland, Canada and the US offering their residents a healthy and comfortable living.

Log home building

We use spruce, which is growing in our woods for the construction of Canadian log homes. The spruce is 110 to 130 years old. The trees are cut down in our woods of the “Hunsrück-Hochwald” and are being manually barked and sanded. After carefully being selected the trunks are being cut according to your personal plan and trunk after trunk is being put on each other. When the construction of the house has been finished on our premises, each trunk is being marked with a combination of numbers. Later, we set again carefully together every trunk on the building site.

Possibilities of log home building

Even if you wish to build a home for living, a cabin, an office or a garage, the spruce we are using for building log homes (approx. 2-3 solid cubic meter per trunk) does not leave any architectural wishes open you may have. Angled house or in rectangle, with a bay and round arch, even with a stonewalled tower…Almost everything is possible. Therefore you can fully plan according to your perceptions and we are taking care of that the Canadian Log Home tradition will comply with your expectations of building and living. Beside wood you may also combine other natural materials as stone, glass or schist. Even if furnished in a modern or rustic way a log home always offers you sufficient space for your individual design.

Transport and assembly

When the planning is finished and we have finished building your log home during 4-6 weeks on our premises, we are beginning with the loading at a fixed delivery date. Therefore we use a flat bed trailer on which we transport your house. Depending on the local conditions we are beginning the assembly with a stationary or truck-mounted crane. Then the log home is being built together on the cellar platform (already constructed by the client) during 2-3 days including the roof structure.

Wood protection

The main imperative of building with wood is the constructive protection of wood. This applies to the pergola in the garden and also to the log home and this must already be taken care of during the planning. Therefore the wide excess end of the roof does not only look better from an optical point of view but it also protects the wood against rain and too intensive solar influence. Water, which comes into touch with wood, must be able to run-off without hindrance. Here, the log home builder is guaranteeing with his professional work. A treatment with boric salt is being done by us, an ecological painting from outside as well as a wax or linseed oil inside are completely sufficient for the protection of the wood and underline the long life time of a log home over generations.

Ecology

When constructing our log homes we attach great importance to ecological aspects. Therefore we use the spruce of our woods, which is growing again and which has short transport ways. For the conservation of the trunks we use a boric salt solution with which we also treat the cotton which is used for the sealing of the trunks. If the client also uses an ecological product for the outside painting and wax and linseed oil for the interior painting, the advantage of wood as a building material is preserved. The wood remains breathable and regulates the humidity of the room and a healthy and allergy free living climate. If you add windows with modern thermal insulation and respective roof insulation, you can count on long-term low energy consumption.

Fire insurance

One will often find the opinion that all wooden houses are very expensive in terms of fire insurance. This may be true for standard wooden houses and certain wood constructions but does not apply to log homes. You can be sure that log homes are being classified by insurers the same as normal stone houses because of the big diameter of the trunk which results in higher resistance against fire. None of our clients has been graded in a higher pricing class regarding fire insurance so far.
